Glan-Y-Gors Round 6 - Dragon Masters - July
27/10/09
Qualifying > I went out for the greasy wet qualifying at the back of the grid, giving myself room to try to get some fast laps in. I soon realised that I would have to push very hard, so I did. This soon returned a 51.97 lap time, although as I struggled for all round grip, Declan Jones went quickest with a 51.70. At the end of qualifying I managed to finish 2nd.
Heat 1 > I started 2nd for the first heat. I had a good start and passed Declan at the Spoon after getting a good run down the straight. I held this until the flag, and after the 15 laps of the heat, Declan finished 0.80 seconds behind me. I set the fastest lap with a 43.52.
Heat 2 > I started on pole for the next heat. We had 3 formation laps as Declan, who obviously wanted a good start, jumped the start three times! On the third and final formation lap, the lights went green although Declan still jumped the start. I had work to do then, as Jacob Hunstone managed to get past me at the start. I passed Jacob nearly straight away, and after passing Declan at the Spoon, he re-passed me on the exit. After a few laps, I gained on him again and passed him at the Spoon. I held this for a lap until he dived to pass me, again at the Spoon, and gave me a nudge, sending me wide. I caught back up with him although did not have enough laps to be able to pass. I finished 0.20 seconds behind Declan and set the fastest lap of a 43.67.
Heat 3 > In the third heat I started on 2nd spot. I had a good start and passed Declan around the outside down the straight. After a few nudges from behind coming into the Carousel, I settled down and held the position until the end of the heat, pulling away to win by 1.83 seconds and setting the fastest lap with a 43.69.
Final > I started on pole for the final. After a reasonable start I led into the first corner and then managed to create a good gap in the first few laps. This increased slowly over the following laps, although towards the end of the final I backed off marginally because a huge black cloud appeared from nowhere and it felt as though it was going to rain. Luckily it held off, although as soon as we entered the pits the heavens opened! I won the finl by 1.29 seconds and set the fastest lap of a 43.68, winning the Dragon Masters for the first time after being denied it the year before!
