Glan-Y-Gors Round 10 - November
27/10/09
Qualifying > I went out at the front in qualifying to get the best possible gap to set a fast time, as I knew that we were quick in the wet conditions. I went immediately quickest with a 52.52, and then went quicker again the following lap with a 52.18, 6 tenths quicker than second placed James Nicholls. I held the fastest lap until the end of the session and came in a few laps early to save my tyres.
Heat 1 > I started on pole for heat 1. The track had started to dry and the conditions were marginal, and we had to take a very blind guess at the setup because the track was drying quickly, but in between very short, persistent rainy showers. As a result I struggled in this heat and slowly dropped back into the clutches of Lincoln Newby (no.67), who was quick for the first few laps. On the penultimate lap I was demoted to third place by Jake Dobson (no.39) but although on the last lap I caught back up with the leading pair, I was unable to do anything about my position and had to hold it to the flag, my fastest lap a 50.40.
Heat 2 > I started in 3rd position for this heat, but had a bad start. By the end of the first lap however, I managed to get up into 2nd place, and chased down Lincoln who had gained a small lead. I passed him on lap 5 and held the lead until the last lap, when a blistering Jake Dobson passed me and pulled out a gap of about 0.9 seconds, very likely due to tyre pressures, as my tyres were overheating in the drying conditions. I finished in 2nd place and my fastest lap was a 47.78.
Final > I started 3rd for the final, but again got a bad start. The track was now dry enough for slicks but it was still very greasy and there was not much grip. I made it into the lead on the first lap and pulled out a small lead early on in the race, but struggled for overall grip and as a result confidence to push hard in the conditions. Seb Morris (no.31) passed me on lap 4 and from here on I started to drop back slowly into the sights of the other drivers on new tyres (I had chosen to use old tyres to save some money!). On lap 6 I was bumped out of the way by Liam Kelly (no.27) but could not regain the position. I dropped to 4th place and managed to hold this to the flag, my fastest lap a 44.72.
