Glan-Y-Gors GYGPrix (& Round 6), July 2006
This weekend it was sunny on the Saturday and rainy in the afternoon on the Sunday. There was one novice (57) that I had to beat to get the novice trophy.
Heat 1 > In the first heat I started 9th and at the start it was chaos with a lot of people spinning off or running wide. Also the other novice that I was racing against over the weekend hadn't made the start so finished near last. By the end of the first lap I was seventh but the next lap I ran wide giving two places back. I got stuck behind a slower kart for a few laps but then got past them on lap 5. For the next three laps I stayed in my spot and on the last lap I made a move to put me back in 7th place for the finish.
Heat 2 > In this heat I started 9th again. Everyone got a good start and by the end of the first lap I had moved up to 8th spot. I was behind no.46 for three laps and up ahead on the exit of the first corner, no.76 had run wide and come back onto the track at a strange angle, causing him to spin. All of this was unknown to me and no.46, so I made a move on 46 on the first corner. No.76 tried to rejoin the race in front of me (dopey thing) and I couldn't get out of the way because 46 would not give way. So I slammed on the brakes and sort of slid sideways into him, absolutely trashing my kart and his was fine! I got thrown onto the sidepod and rear wheel of my kart. Afterwards I had a lot of vibration coming through the steering-wheel of my kart. I finished second to last in the end and was ordered to go and see the paramedics afterwards. (because I had been thrown out of my kart).
Heat 3 > I started 7th in this heat. I made a place in the first lap and another at the end of the lap after putting me in 5th. At the end of the next lap however, I made a move on no.47 and he tried weaving to put me off up to the Spoon hairpin at the top of the track. Whilst I was concentrating on not being smashed off the track, I missed my braking point completely, braking as hard as I could, but unfortunately I collected no.45 who then collected no.16. All in all not my finest moment and very embarrassing, and lots of apologies after the heat.
I must remember the left pedal = brake, something I normally try to avoid!
Final > With what had happened in the heats, I had to start 10th (last!). We had a bad start although by the end of the first lap I was up to 7th place. By the next lap I had made another place and the lap after yet another place up to promote me to 5th. There I stayed until lap 10 when I moved up to 4th because no.62 got disqualified for an accident that didn't actually concern her and the 'accident' was on a tape of the whole race - it showed that it didn't actually happen!! As for no.47 he didn't make it past lap two, because when he put one of his rear tyres on for the final it overtook him going up the hill after the Carousel section!!
